CyclingOutdoor cycling is a great way to keep fit and most of the time insurers are not going to see this as a high risk sport.

Cycling in itself is not likely to come up in an insurance application question set but it could be that our advisers ask you a few questions just to double check this.

We could ask:

  • Are you cycling competitively?
  • Are you cycling on any extreme routes?
  • Do you specifically go and cycle outside the UK?

When you apply for life insurance, mountain biking should not cause any concern to the underwriting of your application. Insurers often ask about any extreme sports that you do, so if you are doing BMX style cycling down a mountain, it’s often a good idea to check how the insurer might feel about this.

Our expert advisers will find the best life insurance policy to match your needs.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical illness insurance for cyclists should be available at ordinary rates with all major insurance providers.

Travel abroad and any extreme versions of cycling could affect the terms of critical illness cover that you are given. What can be quite interesting is that what an insurer thinks of as an extreme sport can be quite different to what you might think.

Our advisers know the right way to get you the critical illness cover that you need.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection for cyclists should be available at standard rates with most insurers.

Cyclists applying for income protection policies will find it useful to know that previous injuries can sometimes lead to exclusions on the policy. Things like back pain or having had torn a ligament, potentially coming off your bike and breaking a bone in the past, can lead to exclusions on the policy claims set. These exclusions might be permanent or for a set time period.

Our award winning advisers will find the right insurer to give you the peace of mind that comes with income protection.

Cyclists are typically fit individuals, who maintain a healthy lifestyle, to achieve peak performance for the ride.

For those cyclists who are actively exercising, there are specific healthy living insurance policies that could suit you.

This policy type provides access to financial rewards and reduced premiums if you live healthily.

To find out is this policy could be right for you, check out our healthy living page.

Are you planning on cycling somewhere a bit more exotic than the UK? We have access to a specialist travel insurance broker and you can find out more details about them on our travel insurance page.

Common Questions

Hi, there are a few insurances that you might want to consider. We would suggest that travel insurance would be a good idea, we don’t advice on this but can direct you to advisers that do.

For things like life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection, your cycling abroad doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have these. These policies are more focused upon if you or your loved ones struggle financially if you die, become critically ill or become poorly and cannot work. It could be that you need these and we are happy to help you decide what cover you should have.
