Life Insurance

Life Insurance for those who have had skin cancer may be available at normal terms with some insurance providers. The insurer will be interested in the type of skin cancer you had, the diagnosed staging/grading, treatments that you used and any lasting complications that you have. Low staging/grading skin cancer that occurred some time ago may see you eligible for standard terms of Life Insurance. If the skin cancer was high grading/staging and/or recently treated then the insurer may choose to offer you Life Insurance at non-standard terms.

Critical Illness Cover

When applying for Critical Illness Cover you will need to detail your history of skin cancer including the diagnosed grading/staging, treatments pursued and residual complications that are present. With skin cancer that was low staging/grading and that has not required treatment for some time you may find that the insurer offers you standard terms for Critical Illness Cover (depending on the type of skin cancer). If the skin cancer was classed as high staging/grading with recent treatment the insurance provider may choose to place a cancer exclusion on your policy claims set. This may be a full cancer exclusion or specifically directed to skin cancers, there is also a chance with higher grading cancers that cover may be declined or postponed for a number of years from last treatment.

Income Protection

Income Protection for those that have had skin cancer may be available at standard terms if a specific amount of time has passed since your last treatment for the condition. If the skin cancer was of a high staging/grading, required recent treatment and/or has resulted in lasting complications the insurer may choose to offer you Income Protection at special terms. This may be a cancer exclusion to the policy and/or a premium increase.

When Income Protection does not suit your needs you may wish to consider Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Cover. An Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policy provides short term income protection for between 12-24 months if you are unable to work due to disability, severe illness or are made involuntarily redundant. When you apply for this policy your medical history will not be taken into account when terms are offered, meaning that your skin cancer will not have an impact upon the policy premiums. However any claim that you make will be subject to medical underwriting and exclude any claim related to your skin cancer.

Summary definition

Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body and is thought to be linked to over exposure to the sun, already having moles or caused by a genetic tendency to the condition. Skin cancer is usually confirmed from a biopsy and treatment varies depending upon the type, staging and grading of the cancer. Non-melanomas are a type of skin cancer that is diagnosed when changes to your skin develop into pink sores/lumps that do not heal and may become itchy and bleed. Malignant melanomas occur when the skin cancer alters an existing mole or causes a new mole to develop.
