Metabolic Syndrome & Life InsuranceLiving with metabolic syndrome can have a big impact on your day to day life and can sometimes leave you feeling restricted, when it comes to accessing insurance.

You might find that your BMI has meant that some insurers have said that they cannot offer you life insurance. This is why we are here, to step in and find the right insurer for you, that will give you the insurance that you need.

There are a few options when it comes to buying life insurance. It might be that it’s quite straightforward and we just need to look at a different insurer than you tried, or it may be that we need to look at some specialist routes. We will explain the different choices for you.

Things we need to know:

  • When were you diagnosed with metabolic syndrome?
  • What type of diabetes do you have?
  • What medication do you take?
  • Has your weight changed a lot recently?

When you apply for life insurance you need to detail your pre-existing medical history to the insurer, for them to fully assess your application.

For someone with metabolic syndrome this will involve detailing the type of diabetes that you have, your high blood pressure readings, height and weight. The insurer will want to the medications that are in use, your waist circumference and possibly your dress/trouser size.

You may find that some insurers ask you if you are making positive lifestyles choices, such as eating healthy and trying to exercise. This is intended to be a positive question as there are specific life insurance policies, that can potentially reward you with reduced premiums, if you are taking these steps.

You will also need to let the insurer know of any other medical conditions that you have and you may find that the insurer asks to speak with your GP to confirm your health. This is common practise and is arranged at the insurers expense.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

There are some specialist policies that are able to offer critical illness insurance to those who are diabetic. You should be fully aware with these policies, that they often place a number of exclusions on the policy claims set, due to the diabetes. It’s important to make sure that you familiarise yourself with exactly what you are and are not covered for when arranging this cover.

Please use the links further down the page to establish the range of insurance products that are available for you to apply for.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

When you apply for income protection and have metabolic syndrome, it’s good to be prepared that the insurer will exclude any claim relating to your diabetes. Depending upon your symptoms, there is the potential that you will be declined income protection cover with some insurers.

GET AN INCOME PROTECTION QUOTE

If you are declined income protection it is possible to protect your income using an accident and sickness insurance policy instead. These policies are not medically underwritten so you will be accepted for the cover regardless of having metabolic syndrome, however any claim that you place will exclude any pre-existing medical conditions that you have.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a generic term used when an individual is diagnosed with a combination of a high bmi, high blood pressure and diabetes. Being diagnosed with all three of these conditions can lead to increased risks of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and atherosclerosis. The condition is very common within the UK and is generally inherited or due to being overweight or physically inactive. For some it is possible to reverse the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome by making different lifestyle choices.

Common Questions

Hi, I’m sorry to hear that you have been struggling to get life insurance. Each insurer has their own acceptance guides, when it comes to things like BMI. For life insurance with standard insurers, this can be in the early 40s, some go much higher. We have provided advice to someone with a BMI of over 70 before.

It really comes down to finding the right insurer for you and we would welcome to chance to support you.
