Life Insurance for people who have had kidney cancer where available will often come with an increased policy premium. The insurer will be particularly interested in what type of kidney cancer that you had, treatment that was undertaken and if the remaining kidney is working well. There is the potential that after a number of years since your last treatment you may be able to secure Life Insurance at standard terms; depending upon the staging and grading of your diagnosis. If the kidney cancer had spread to the lymph nodes and/or had a high staging it is possible that your Life Insurance application would need to be placed with a specialist insurer. In instances where the kidney cancer was very severe you may find that your application for Life Insurance is declined.

Critical Illness Cover
When you apply for Critical Illness Cover after having cancer you will generally get the best terms of cover the longer the time has been since you last had treatment and got the all clear. Any offer of Critical Illness Cover will most likely come with a cancer exclusion. Depending upon the staging, grading and the length of time that has passed you may be able to access Critical Illness Cover without a cancer exclusion after a number of years. As with Life Insurance, terms for Critical Illness Cover will be highly dependent upon the type of kidney cancer that you had, the treatments you were given and if the remaining kidney continues to work well.

Income Protection for people who have had kidney cancer may be available at normal terms if significant time has passed since you got the all clear and stopped receiving treatment. It is more likely that any offer for Income Protection will come with either an increase to the policy premium or a cancer exclusion on the policy. The terms that you are offered will be dependent upon the staging and grading of the kidney cancer, the treatments that you underwent and the time since you last received treatment.

If you find that the terms you are given for Income Protection do not meet your expectations it may be worthwhile considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover. This type of policy provides a short-term monthly income replacement of 12-24 months if you are unable to work due to disability, long-term injury or redundancy. Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover is not medically underwritten at the application stage which means that you will be accepted for the policy at standard terms. Whilst this can be beneficial to those with a medical history you should be fully aware that the policy will exclude any claim that you place that is related to an existing medical condition.
