We understand that most people who contract Hepatitis C make a full recovery with no lasting complications or impact to the liver. And we've made it our business to help people who have, or have had Hepatitis C, to get fair access to life insurance cover.
In order to help you to get the right policy, we'll need to know a few key things. These include::
If you've recovered completely, then many insurers will be able to offer you life insurance on normal terms.
However, if the condition was contracted through drug use, this is likely to affect your application. Some insurers will, in those cases, choose to offer at non-standard terms or even decline the cover.
For those who still have Hepatitis C or who have chronic Hepatitis, you may still be able to get life insurance, providing it's under control and well treated. In this case, you're likely to be offered on special terms (an increase in the premium).
Critical illness cover for people who have had Hepatitis C could, much like life insurance, may be available on normal terms, if you've recovered fully and you have not suffered any lasting damage to your liver.
You're likely to be asked the same sort of questions as for life insurance. And again, a key factor is likely to be in how you contracted Hepatitis C. If this was through drug use, you are likely to be offered critical illness cover on non-standard terms, or potentially even declined cover.
If you have ongoing Hepatitis C or chronic Hepatitis C, you will need to take out cover through a specialist insurer.
You might be able to get Income Protection at standard terms through insurers who look favourably upon your medical history. For Income Protection applications, the insurer will ask whether you've had significant periods of time off work due to Hepatitis C.
If you still have Hepatitis C, you might still be able to access some short term income protection policies. However, you should be aware that these policies will come with terms that prevent you from claiming if the claim is related to hepatitis.
If you're planning a holiday, then be sure to take out travel insurance from a provider specialising in policies for travellers who have had or have Hepatitis C. Find out more by visiting our travel page here.

1. I was refused life insurance when I had Hepatitis C. I've recovered now. Will my insurance be affected?
We're sorry to hear you were previously declined insurance. If you have recovered from the condition since your application and there are no lasting consequences or liver damage, then you could potentially be offered a normal terms life insurance policy. However, this will also depend upon how you contracted Hepatitis C in the first place. If this was through drug use, that could mean you will only be offered non standard terms and might still possibly be declined on the standard insurance market. But we can help to ensure your application goes through specialist providers.
2. I have chronic Hepatitis C. Will I be able to get life insurance?
We understand how worrying it can be dealing with health conditions, and worrying about being refused life insurance on top isn't what you need. But actually, if your condition is well controlled and treated, you could still be accepted for life insurance, albeit potentially with non standard terms.
