Diverticulitis & Life InsuranceWe understand that diverticulitis can have an impact on many aspects of your life. For some people the condition causes a bit of discomfort, for other symptoms can be strong and make working and general day to day activities hard to complete.

We are here to help you, so that you can get the insurances that you want.

To help you find the right insurer for you, it is handy if you can have answers to the following questions available:

  • When were you diagnosed with diverticulitis?
  • How often do you have symptoms?
  • Do you require painkillers to help manage your symptoms?
  • How much of your bowel is affected?
  • Have you had surgery?
  • Are you able to work?

Life Insurance for people living with diverticulitis may be available at normal terms, depending upon your symptoms.

For people who experience few symptoms of diverticulitis and are able to successfully control the condition over time through diet planning and mild painkillers, standard terms for life insurance could be available.

If you have had frequent and strong symptoms of diverticulitis within the last couple of years or have required surgery, it is possible that the insurer will offer life insurance at non-standard terms. This will be in the form of a premium increase.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical illness cover for people living with diverticulitis may be available depending upon how much condition affects you. The insurer will want to know details like how much of your bowel is affected and how frequently you experience flare-ups.

Where symptoms are mild and have not caused any significant impact to your health recently, it is possible that critical illness cover could be available at normal terms.

If you are currently taking medication to control the symptoms of the diverticulitis or have had recent flare ups, the insurance provider may ask to see a report from your GP to confirm your overall health.

This might sound intrusive but please be assured that this happens with many medical conditions. The insurer can only see this report with your expressed permission and it is arranged at the insurers own expense.

If you are due upcoming surgery for the diverticulitis it is likely that your application for critical illness cover will be postponed by most standard insurers, until you are fully recovered.

GET A CRITICAL ILLNESS QUOTE

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

For those who have not had symptoms of diverticulitis for some time, it is possible that income protection could be available at normal terms.

Terms for income protection will be dependent upon how strong your symptoms are, the time since you last experienced a flare-up and if the diverticulitis has caused you to have any time off work.

For people with more strong or recent episodes of diverticulitis, income protection may come at non-standard terms. This will be in the form of a premium increase and/or an exclusion for claims relating to the diverticulitis.

GET AN INCOME PROTECTION QUOTE

For people who find that the terms on offer for income protection do not meet their needs, it is worthwhile considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover.

This type of policy can provide you with short-term income protection of between 12 and 24 months, if you are unable to work due to long-term disability, injury or are made involuntarily redundant.

Accident, sickness and unemployment policies are not medically underwritten at the time that you take out the plan, so the diverticulitis will have no impact upon the policy terms. However, if you do become unable to work, claims related to diverticulitis will be excluded on most policies.
