- Where does the dermatomyositis affect you?
- What symptoms do you have?
- What medication do you take?
- What treatments do you use?
- Are you able to work?
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness insurance for people with dermatomyositis will typically be available with a number of insurers. It is incredibly important to research the market and find the right insurer for your individual needs.
The insurance provider will want to see a report from your GP that will confirm your general health and the specific symptoms of dermatomyositis that you experience. The report will also give them details of any medications and methods used to treat the condition.
The critical illness cover application will likely be accepted at non-standard terms. This means it will probably have a loading to the policy premium.
In some cases the application may be postponed until a later date, or in rare cases be declined. Please do not worry if that is the case, there are specialist insurers that can be approached for critical illness cover.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people living with dermatomyositis should be available with a number of insurers. You are most likely to receive an offer of cover if there is little or no medication in use.
The insurer will want to know if the dermatomyositis has caused you to have any time off work. If you have, please do not worry, we can talk you through the options that are available.
It’s likely that the insurer will want to confirm your medical details with your GP. This might not sound ideal, but it is often a good thing, as you then have confidence in knowing that you have not missed or forgotten anything relevant to your application.
If income protection is available to you following the application underwriting process, it will most likely be at special terms. This will probably include an exclusion for any claim relating to the dermatomyositis.
If you find that income protection is not available to you, or you do not like what is on offer, there are other options. One of these is Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover.
This policy type will replace your income for 12-24 months if you are ill and unable to work, or if you are made involuntarily redundant. The application will not ask you medical information, so your dermatomyositis will have no bearing on the acceptance terms.
But, it is important to note that the policy will exclude any claims relation to the dermatomyositis.
