Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection for Truck Drivers
- Example Occupations: Lorry driver
- Possible Risks: Deep vein thrombosis(DVT), safety equipment, cargo, high BMI, type 2 diabetes
- Occupational Duties: Long haul journeys, loading and unloading cargo, security of cargo
Life Insurance for truck drivers should be available at standard terms. If you travel regularly outside of the UK this will need to be assessed by the insurer as to whether they can offer standard terms. It will most likely be the destination that you travel to that could cause additional underwriting of your application, please visit our hazardous travel page to see if the country you visit is of a high risk.
Critical Illness Cover
Critical Illness Insurance for Lorry drivers will also generally be available at normal terms. Again, if you travel regularly outside of the UK it is possible that the insurer may assess your application more thoroughly depending upon your destination of travel.
Income Protection for truck drivers is available with a number of providers, but you need to ensure that your policy is written with an own occupation definition. This is only available with a few providers and own occupation is the best form of cover that you can have for Income Protection. Otherwise any claim that you make will be based upon your ability to do any job, and not just your current position as a truck driver, making it more difficult to claim on. The policy can be written with deferment periods of 1 day, 1 week, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 13 weeks, 26 weeks and 52 weeks. Our financial advisers can help you to determine which deferment period suits your circumstances best due to policy cost, your savings and employment benefits.
Truck drivers transport cargo to specific destinations within the UK or further afield. Truck drivers are considered to be those individuals who drive vehicle classes C1, C1+E, C and C+E. There are strict regulations on the rest breaks and maximum driving times that truck drivers may take each day, for both their own health and the safety of other drivers on the road.
