Musculoskeletal Conditions & Life InsuranceAlthough you have a musculoskeletal condition, it often doesn’t effect life insurance applications.

We are here to advise and help you through the application process. We know which insurers to apply for that will be supportive of your health.

Things we need to know:

  • When were you diagnosed with having a musculoskeletal condition?
  • What condition do you have?
  • Are you taking any medication or undergoing any treatments?
  • Does it affect your ability to work or do day to day activities?

Even if you answer yes to taking medications, or it affecting your day to day activities, there can often still be options for life insurance.

You should have no concern applying for life insurance if you have a musculoskeletal condition, as whilst your condition may be serious, many are not usually life threatening.

Depending upon your condition and the strength of your symptoms, it may be necessary for the insurance provider to speak with your GP. This is a standard process and can be handled fully by our team, who will keep you away from any hassle.

We keep you up to date regularly and support you whilst the policy is arranged, and we will keep supporting you afterwards too.

It is possible that your application for life insurance will be accepted at standard terms. The terms that you are offered are dependent upon your specific diagnosis and the types of medication that might be in use.

Your condition may result in your life insurance application being awarded “special” rates. For life insurance this usually means a premium increase, rather than an exclusion.

Some people might find that their diagnosis, medication type or the strength of their symptoms, could lead some insurers to decline the application for life insurance. The important thing is to find the right insurer for you, as soon as possible.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Again you should not be concerned about applying for critical illness insurance with your musculoskeletal condition. Should your condition be on the list of claimable conditions of the critical illness policy, it will certainly be excluded from your cover.

Whilst this may make you wonder if there is any point applying for critical illness cover, please be aware that theses policies usually cover no less than 60 conditions. It is unlikely that you will have any conditions excluded, but if you do, there will still be plenty of others that you are insured for.

If your symptoms and treatment are quite strong you may find that some insurers decline your critical illness cover application. It may be that your application needs placing with a different insurer, or that a more specialist route will be more beneficial for you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection policies are available for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions and should be a relatively straightforward process. This will depend upon the strength of your symptoms, your occupation and if you have recently taken any time of work due to your health.

Your own condition will most likely be excluded from the policy claims set and your premiums may be increased too. There are some options that will not exclude claims relating to your pre-existing condition, but the options for accessing these can be quite restricted. Please request a quotation and one of our advisers will be able to explore the different options with you.

It is usually a good idea to have travel insurance that supports your medical history when planning a holiday. We do not give advice on travel insurance, but there are specialists listed on our travel insurance page that you can talk to.

What are Musculoskeletal Conditions?

Musculoskeletal conditions can be some of the most difficult illnesses to diagnose and manage as they can affect almost all areas of the body. Musculoskeletal conditions affect muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones, and as such can often be an “invisible” illness that can make it hard for others to understand that something is wrong.

Linked with: Multiple SclerosisBack Pain, Rheumatoid Arthritis

Please find further information below on a number of musculoskeletal conditions, each link provides detail on obtaining policies such as Life Insurance, Life and Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection with the chosen condition.

Any and all of the above conditions must be disclosed upon Life, Life and Critical Illness or Income Protection policy that you apply for.

Common Questions

Hi, it really depends upon what the check up is for. With some conditions it is quite standard to see your rheumatologist routinely and insurers do take this into account. If you are due to have any tests or there have been any changes to your health, some insurers will want to wait to review your application until you have seen your specialist.

Hi, it would be really good for us to have a chat. When you take out life insurance, most insurers are accepting your application based upon your health at the day that the policy starts. This means that if your health changes after this date, they will still continue to cover you on your life insurance policy. I will call you and we can check over your policy terms and conditions.
