Kidney Stones & Life InsuranceAlso known as:  Nephrolithiasis

Linked with: Renal colic, urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney infection, Crohn’s disease, sarcoidosis, overactive parathyroid gland, sepsis, gout

Possible symptoms: Abdominal pain, sharp pain while urinating, nausea, blood in the urine

When you have had kidney stones, Life Insurance providers will be interested in the amount of times you have had the condition, frequency of occurrences, treatments undertaken and if there are any linked secondary conditions. Where kidney stones have passed naturally, have been a one-off instance and there are no additional contributory conditions it is likely that you could secure Life Insurance at standard terms. If you suffer from kidney stones frequently, have required strong medication or surgery, or have related conditions contributing to kidney stone development the insurer may wish to speak with your GP to establish your present state of health. In this circumstance it is possible that the insurer may decide to offer you Life Insurance at standard terms or special terms which would involve an increase to the base premium.

When you apply for Critical Illness Cover, kidney stones should be clearly detailed within your application including information regarding the amount of instances of the condition, secondary causes, treatments and medication used. Where kidney stones have been infrequent with mild symptoms and have required little treatment, you may be able to secure Critical Illness Cover at standard rates. If you have had multiple kidney stones, required strong treatment and/or medication, or have an additional illness that is contributing to the kidney stone production, your policy may be accepted at special terms. This could include a premium increase or an exclusion on the policy for any claim linked to the renal system.

Income Protection for those with kidney stones can be available at standard terms if they have not caused any absence from work, presented mild symptoms, required little treatment and occurred infrequently. Where kidney stones regularly form and are linked to a secondary illness it is probable that the insurer will want to speak with your GP to establish your general state of health. Following review of a medical report your application may then be accepted at standard terms, special terms (premium increase) or declined.
