Coeliac Disease & Life Insurance
We understand that being a coeliac can have its moments of frustration (strict diet planning and eating out can be a pain!), but it doesn’t stop you having the same insurance needs as anyone else.

One of our team has coeliac disease and we are constantly trying lots of new and wonderful foods that are gluten free (ok, not so wonderful a lot of the time!).

As the condition often doesn’t have a notable impact on life span, life insurance for people with coeliac disease can often be available at standard terms. But, if your symptoms are quite acute, there may be a slight increase in the premium.

Potential insurers will need to know:

  • How often your coeliac disease flares up?
  • When you were diagnosed?
  • What medications you take to manage it?
  • Any complications?

Some insurers will require you to wait set time periods after your diagnosis of coeliac disease, before they can consider your application. If you were diagnosed with coeliac disease at least 6 months before you make your application and it is well controlled, you may be offered life insurance on standard terms.

Insurers may request a report from your GP in order to obtain the results of any investigations you have undertaken. This is only done with your expressed permission and is so that they can get an overall view of your health.

The key thing is being able to strip away all the jargon and access the insurer that is best for you, first time around. That is where our team shine!

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Applications for critical illness cover when you have coeliac disease, will be looked at in much the same way as life insurance applications. If your condition is well controlled and your diagnosis was made at least 6 months ago, it’s possible that critical illness cover will be offered on standard terms.

In other cases where you were diagnosed recently, you have regular flare-ups or investigations have shown damage to your bowel, the cover may be offered at an increased premium. It is possible that the insurer may ask to see a report from your GP so that they can fully understand your diagnosis and overall health.

It is our job to find the best contract for you, looking at the quality, price and enhanced medical services that different insurers provide.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

As with life insurance and critical illness protection, income protection for people with coeliac disease may be available on normal terms, if the condition is well controlled.

A main point of concern for any potential insurer with income protection, is any time off work that you have had as a result of the condition. If you were diagnosed at least 12 months before the date of the application you may get more favourable terms for income protection.

It is possible that the insurer will need to speak to your GP about the results of any investigations you have had, in order to get a general idea as to how the coeliac disease impacts upon your health and ability to work.

If for whatever reason long-term income protection is off the cards, it could be worthwhile considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover. This policy will replace your income for 12-24 months if you are unable to work due to long-term injury or disability.

An important point to note is that this policy is not medically underwritten so being a coeliac will not affect your acceptance on the policy. However, at the point of claim the insurer will exclude any claims relating to the coeliac disease.

What is Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is a condition that causes the body’s autoimmune system to enter a heightened defence state when items containing gluten are eaten. When the autoimmune system is triggered by the digestion of gluten based products the intestines (small bowel) can become damaged; the substance gliadin within gluten causes this response.

There are a number of factors that can increase your chance of developing coeliac disease including a family history of the condition, environmental factors such as prior digestive infections and secondary medical conditions such as type 1 diabetes or ulcerative colitis. There is now medical evidence that suggests that introducing gluten into a baby’s diet too early may lead to the development of coeliac disease.

Common Questions

It can be difficult to obtain life insurance if you are newly diagnosed with coeliac disease. In most cases, insurers on the standard market will require the diagnosis to be at least 6 months old. But don’t worry, there are specialist insurers that we can look at for your insurance.

If you were diagnosed with coeliac disease more than a year ago and have a condition that is well managed with diet, there’s a realistic chance of you obtaining standard terms cover. This will depend on a number of other factors too, of course.
