Basal-Cell Carcinoma & Life InsuranceBeing diagnosed with basal-cell carcinoma is an unnerving experience, that can be coupled with feelings of worry and anxiety. Hearing the ‘C’ word can be very unsettling, and may have caused you to panic and worry about many different aspects of life.

One of these will be making sure that your family is looked after in the future and you’ll want peace of mind that this is going to happen. This is where we can help.

We have a compassionate team, sensitive to your situation, who will work with you and your family to help achieve the best possible outcome for you. We will listen to your concerns and worries and talk you through the life insurance options that are available.

Our advisors are on hand to deal with your queries and questions throughout the process. You will have a dedicated adviser who will support you through the full application process and continue to support you for many years to come.

So, if you have had basal-cell carcinoma and you want to speak with us about life insurance options, there’s a few things we will need to know to be able to help you:

  • When did you receive your diagnosis?
  • Have you had treatment, and if so, when?
  • What treatment did you receive?
  • When were you last treated?
  • Are you fully recovered?

Life insurance is something you might not expect to get after you have had basal-cell carcinoma, but actually, it can be possible. It very much depends on your individual circumstances, and specifically how long it is since you completed your last treatment.

If it was a one-off diagnosis, which is often the case with basal-cell carcinoma, we may be able to get insurance for you on the standard insurance market. This is more likely if the grading or staging of the cancer was low and it has been a good amount of time since you last received treatment.

If, on the other hand, you have been diagnosed and treated for multiple cases of basal-cell carcinoma, the grading or staging of the cancer was high or you’ve only recently completed your treatment for it, then it may be that for a bit of time insurers will charge a higher premium for the policy.

In either situation, you may also be asked to give the insurer permission to request a report from your GP. This is perfectly normal and gives the insurer an assessment of your overall health and accurate details about the cancer, your treatment and recovery.

And if you have basal-cell carcinoma now, there are some insurance options for you too. These would be with a specialist provider and your policy would likely exclude any claims relating to the basal-cell carcinoma.

Our goal is to make life easier for you by trying to remove as much of the stress and worry you might face applying for life insurance, after you have recovered from basal-cell carcinoma.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

As with life insurance, having previously had basal-cell carcinoma doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t be able to get critical illness cover now. With you having had cancer, it may be that any policy you take out will come with some kind of cancer exclusion, and this may last for some time after you recover.

The key factors to know are whether the basal-cell carcinoma was a one-off event, the staging and grading that it was, the treatment schedule you needed and how long ago since your treatment ended.

Standard terms could be available if your cancer was caught early, with simple treatment and there are no lasting complications.

In other cases where it is recurring, the grading or staging of the cancer was high or you’ve only recently completed your treatment, you may find the the premiums for critical illness cover are non-standard (this means increased). There is also the option that some insurers may offer a cancer exclusion instead

Whichever of these situations is closest to describing yours, it is likely that the insurer will want to see a report from your GP to confirm this information. This is simply so that all parties know that when the insurance policy starts, the insurer has accurate information from the medical professionals that looked after you.

Rest assured, we will work to help you find the best deal for your critical illness cover. The offer you get largely depends on your circumstances and making sure you approach the right insurers to meet these. No matter what your situation is, our advisers are there to help you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

There is no question that a diagnosis of basal-cell carcinoma is going to have an impact on your life. And whether you have been given the all-clear from it as a one-off illness, or have experienced basal-cell carcinoma as a recurring condition, it is worth considering the steps that you can take to protect you and your family moving forward.

When it comes to income protection, it’s a similar story to life insurance and critical illness cover; the insurer will need information about whether you’ve experienced multiple instances of the cancer, or if it was a one-off. It is likely you will also be asked about whether you had to take any time off work, and if so, how much.

Either way, securing income protection after recovering from basal-cell carcinoma can be possible, though it will likely come with a cancer exclusion which could be in place for a number of years. An exclusion and any potential higher premiums, may be open for review once more time has passed.

Every person is individual and it is impossible to say exactly what insurances, insurers, and costs will be involved in getting the right policy for you, without knowing your circumstances in full. We have many year experience in arranging insurance for people that have had cancer and are ready to help you.

GET AN INCOME PROTECTION QUOTE

If you find, that the terms for income protection don’t suit your needs, don’t worry, we can look into other options for you such as an Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policy. This could provide a monthly income replacement for between 12-24 months and as the policies are not medically underwritten, you having had basal-cell carcinoma will have no bearing on the policy price or acceptance terms.

It is worthwhile noting, however, that whilst this is the case, any claim that you place will be medically assessed, and any inability to work due to existing conditions will be excluded.

Are you planning a holiday? Or just some travel abroad? Either way, it’s important that you have the right travel insurance for you.

What is Basal-Cell Carcinoma

Basal-cell carcinomas are thought to primarily be the result of excess exposure to UV rays, family history of cancer and genetics.  For some, the use of proper sunscreen measures to prevent burning and excess exposure to UV rays can help to reduce the risk of being diagnosed with the condition.

Common Questions

We are here to take any hassle on arranging the insurances away from you. Whether you can have the insurance comes down to a number of factors and it may seem like a pain, but we do need to chat through some things with you. We would need to chat over the exact details of your diagnosis, the treatment you have and when you got the all clear. By chatting to one of our Advisers it saves you only need to tell us about your health, you don’t need to go and speak to every insurer, to find out which one is the best one for you. No matter what, you need to do what feels right for you. We can always start having a chat and you will be in control every step of the way, to decide if it’s all getting too much for you.

It is very likely that we have options for you, they may not be what you first think of, but there are many options when it comes to life insurance. It would be really helpful to chat over who you have already applied to insurance for, so that we can work together to figure out what changed the decision on your previous application. Due to data protection and you not submitting the application through ourselves originally, we cannot speak to the original insurer on your behalf. It could be a good idea to ask the insurer to write a detailed response for the decline to your GP, you can then arrange to see your GP who can hopefully chat this through with you.

I was declined life insurance because I have HIV online. After speaking to cura I felt hopeful and was so grateful that they found me cover. I can't recommend them enough for their caring and professional attention. - 5
