CuraVision Transgender Life Insurance - Video Transcript

Hi. Today I'm going to talk to you about arranging life insurance if you are transgender or transsexual. So, the good news is, that in 2012 the EU issued a gender equality ruling which basically meant that insurers couldn't charge different premiums whether or not you're male or female. So with you being transgender, you're not going to have any issues in regards to whether or not different premiums dependent on which gender you are physically or what you identify with. The insurers are going to want to know if you have a gender recognition certificate and when that was issued, and that would be a time that you would then be able to submit your application, life insurance application, based upon the gender that you recognize yourself as being. If you had a change of name as well, an official change of name, then that would mean that you would be able to submit your life insurance application based upon the gender that is associated with your name. If you haven't had that name change or the certificate, then what the insurer would do is have your application submitted, life insurance, based upon the gender that you were physically born as.

If you are transsexual, the insurer is going to want to know when the surgery happened, if you did have any discussions with a counsellor or psychologist beforehand, they'll want to know the month and the year that that happened, as with the surgery, they'll want to know the month and the year, and whether or not there's any lasting complications and any medications that you take. I'm pleased to say, though, that with the life insurers that we would be using, or the critical illness cover or the income protection providers, that the insurances would be available at standard terms, and that's normal terms, provided that, obviously, there isn't any complications following the surgery or any complications in regards to you having the hormone treatments. So, it's very much good news all around. The insurers don't mind which gender you are or that you identify with, and I'd say you can get everything at normal terms.
