When applying for Life Insurance, Iran is classed as a notifiable destination of travel to many insurers. When travelling to Iran the insurer will want to know how often you intend to travel to the country within the next year and the duration of stay. In many cases where applications include intended future travel to Iran, whether as a civilian or military personnel, you may need to approach a specialist provider for the cover. Depending upon the level of unrest in the country at the time of application and your length of stay Life Insurance can be accepted at standard rates or with increased premiums. In some circumstances (high level of unrest and long stays) Life Insurance for travel to Iran can be turned down.
If your travel to Iran is due to military deployment or personal security firms then your application will be underwritten primarily upon your occupation. Armed Forces personnel can often claim back part of the extra premiums paid for the insurance due to deployment status. Please visit our specific section for high risk occupations here, to establish how your employment could affect your Life Insurance application.
When you are visiting Iran for a short period of time such as for a holiday or to visit family your application should be accepted at standard rates.
Critical Illness Cover for those who intend to travel to Iran will be assessed upon the length of stay and frequency of the trips. As with Life Insurance, if your travel to Iran is due to a high risk occupation e.g. military, security, etc. then your application will be assessed with focus on your employment. Military personnel may find that some parts of the critical illness cover are excluded from the claims set, or that an occupational exclusion is place on the policy. This means that your policy will either have certain conditions removed from your claimable illnesses such as loss of limbs, coma and traumatic head injury, or, state that any claim made due to circumstances related to your occupation will not be approved.
In the past civilians have been able to secure Critical Illness Cover whilst travelling to Iraq however this is not currently available at present. The guidelines for these acceptance terms are constantly under review so please feel free to ring us and see if you could now be covered.
Income Protection for military personnel or civilians travelling to Iran will need to be placed with specialist insurance providers who may or may not consider the application. If you intend to travel to Iran in the future you will need to inform the insurer of how long you intend to stay in the country and may need to detail the location where you will be working or visiting. Where your work requires that you travel to Iran the industry (e.g. energy industry) that you work in and job role (e.g. security personnel) that you have, will likely result in your policy premiums being increased. You should not have unrealistic expectations when applying for this cover, it is probable that your premiums will be increased if cover can be offered.
