Life Insurance for people who partake in sailing can often be secured at standard terms provided that you remain in UK waters and are not involved in competitions. The insurer will want to know how regularly you sail, where you sail and whether you sail on your own or as part of a group. Sailing Life Insurance applications that involve transoceanic travel or competitive events may be subject to a premium loading but it is worth speaking to an adviser to confirm as every situation is different.
Critical Illness Insurance for people who sail as a hobby can often be available at normal terms if you keep inshore and do not take part in regular competitions. For those who do perform transoceanic sails or take part in competitions the policy premiums may be increased or a sailing exclusion may be placed on the policy.
Income Protection for people who sail can be available at standard rates, provided that your application is placed with the right insurance company. For standard terms to be available, sailing should be restricted to UK waters with no or little competitions. Where the insurer feels that your sailing is of a higher risk, such as transoceanic sailing and competitions, they may choose to increase your policy premiums or place an exclusion on the policy for any claim related to sailing.

Sailing involves an individual or group of people who use a boat with sails to travel the sea. Yachting refers to the use or a yacht rather than a sail boat and power boating involves the use of a boat powered by a motor. For the purpose of Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection the three are treated the same and will be referred to as sailing for the purpose of this page.
Sailing may be restricted to UK waters or for some individuals may involve transoceanic routes.
This guide covers sailing as a pastime.
